Your Digital Footprint Speaks Before You Do.

A reflection on business ethics, online reputation and the responsibilities that come with being digitally present.

The impression we give the professionals we meet can start long before the first handshake.

Our online presence is a relevant aspect in our professional identity especially in the contemporary world where a simple internet search can show more than a formal introduction. My thinking that digital professionalism solely meant an up-to-date LinkedIn profile showcasing achievements and looking professional online was challenged during the Business Ethics and Digital Footprint lessons which made me reframe my thinking and take into account the responsibilities that come with being digitally present.

“The best lesson I have learnt through this lecture is to create our own brand, be accountable and consistent wherever we are visible.”

An insight that particularly resonated with me was the way that social media has changed the landscape of how the business communicates and the key concerns of privacy, trust and accuracy of information. It made me realise how vulnerable it is to be affected by professional reputation through what we share, the way we communicate and even the information we make public.

While I recognize how the online world can influence perceptions about an audience, it has specifically made me focus on my own identity online. The lesson made me understand the significance of developing a positive digital image and being cautious about the information shared especially on political views, social life and other aspects that questions our professional personality without being inauthentic.

It has been a privilege to use that understanding in the creation of this e-Portfolio. Thus, using the valuable returns of digitalisation and using it the right way to our benefit should be our responsibility as professionals. For instance, this e-Portfolio itself is an example of showcasing my experience and competence, valuable projects to create that professionally responsible digital footprint with the use of technology to portray the person I am professionally.

Therefore, in this digital world, it is crucial that all professionals should responsibly portray their authentic self to ensure the online communication aligns with the professional qualities that they want to be associated with. The best lesson I have learnt through this lecture is to create our own brand, be accountable and consistent wherever we are visible.
